Weight Loss and Popular Myths

Weight loss is one of those things that are followed by various myths and false information. Actually weight loss is getting more and more popular over the globe, kicking such No.1 things as smoking, cancer and AIDS to the curbs.

Unlike European graying population, America tends to the label of fatting population. The figures are as follows: every second can be called overweight in the US, every fifth obese there. And the US is not alone in hitting the record highs. In the end we all will be there – in the world of popular myths about the best/shortest/healthiest way to lose weight. And the only way to win the battle – keep, keep getting more true facts about this problem, and ultimately make your life better, brighter, slimmer.

Let’s have a look at the most popular myths about weight loss, tell them from true facts and try to never follow them again.

Myth No.1 My partner will love me just as I am and a couple of extra pounds will never change it. Fact Historically men have basic instinct of striving for better things and getting better (in their opinion) mate. Dramatically, modern view on ‘better’ body is ‘slimmer’, so they would unlikely feel uncomfortable about changing something (someone) for what they think better. So to feel free in this world, try to look better than most of those… that can attract his attention.

Myth No.2 It’s normal for a woman to gain weight after she gives birth to a child. Fact It’s normal for a woman to gain some weight while she’s carrying a baby, but who said it is a good excuse for remaining fat and ugly after that? Some centuries ago women were more adapted to giving birth to more children (just draw a line: they had 50-60 menstruations per live, while today’s women have up to 500!), thus were a bit more rotund to keep themselves ready to the next conception. Now it’s not that important physiologically as even very slim women give birth to healthy children.

Myth No.3 If I lose weight, I’ll attract the attention of more men/women. Fact That’s a bad concept to start your losing-weight program with. So don’t blame anyone if you don’t get more attention after you lose a couple of pounds, better give more smiles to people, it should work!

Myth No.4 In case of emergency I can lose a lot in a short time. Fact The myth is widespread among both men and women. In fact, it is quite dangerous to lose a lot of pounds at a time, because our bodies need time to get used to new weight and re-organize all the processes inside of us. Sometimes it can even lead to such health problems as heart attack. Better lose a little and then give your body a break.

Myth No.5 Men don’t care about their weight and seldom get on diets. Fact Men really seem to be indifferent about their health and body. But this is just a mask of embarrassment and confusion that comes from another myth of a man that cares of more important things than his body. Though men seem to do more workout rather than women that are more concentrated on diet stuff. But to be honest, men do not treat it like a tragedy when they gain some extra pounds. Still, there are a lot of men that care about their body and lead healthy lifestyle; some of them are even weight loss obsessed.

Myth No.6 If I exclude carbs from my meal it will help me lose weight and I’ll feel healthier. Fact The myth comes from very popular now no carbs or low carbs diets that drives crazy most Americans now. Most people think that starchy food such as potatoes, bread and pasta will make them fat. In fact, carbohydrates are very important in our lives. This is that fuel that is the fastest to burn and to be used. Doctors say that at least 60% of our meal should comprise carbs. And if you are on no carbs diet and feel tired, you are surely to lack carbs.

Myth No.7 What I need to lose weight is simply to cut calories. Fact If you cut your calories too much, your body will react immediately with slower metabolism. Metabolism is the rate that regulates the body's calorie-burning machinery. And your ability to lose weight goes down. What doctors suggest here is to slash your calories-intake a bit, and then see how it works.

Myth No.8 If I don’t eat my favorite food, I’ll lose more. Fact If you don’t eat your favorite food, you’ll face a revolt from your mind. To feel happier we need to be satisfied on many levels, including meal consumption. If we are not – it would inevitably impact our mood and make us unhappy, thus making us eat more and grow fat. Eat whatever you like to eat, and you’ll see that it is not the highest thing in losing weight.

Myth No. 9 If I don’t eat between meals, I’ll get slimmer. Fact Snacking is considered to be kind of a taboo now. If you have a snack, that means you turned to unhealthy thing like burger and will be punished for that with extra pounds. Doctors say, though, that right sort of snacks will help you lose weight. They suggest snacking with fruit and vegetables. Really, they will do no harm to you.

Myth No.10 To start workout I should lose some pounds, otherwise I don’t look slimmer. Fact Some people seriously believe that first they should get on some diet and then start doing some workout to keep them in a good shape. In fact, it is important to combine these two things if you want to lose weight and keep it off. Jogging is a nice thing to choose here!

Myth No.11 Being overweight has nothing to do with heart attack, diabetes and things like that. Fact Being overweight or obese is very dangerous for your health. It may cause such things as heart attack, diabetes, stroke or even cancer, according to physicians. On the other hand, once being avoided, the risk remains very high until you lose weight. It also impacts your self-esteem and makes you feel vulnerable to depressions that can lead to health problems.

Myth No.12 If most people are overweight here, why should I spend time trying to be in a good shape? Fact To be honest, we all are lazy. We say we don’t have time or money or whatever to think about our health. And we eventually get what we paid for – overweight or obesity. Major trends also impact our decision to go to the gym. If nation is considered fat, people see each other and think it is normal to be like everyone else. It can cause real problem because individual is confused with social here and individual needs are abused by social outlook. Social stereotypes of beauty are strongly required here.

Myth No.13 The more I lose now, the more I gain later. Fact People say and studies more or less support the myth that about 95% of people who lose weight regain lost pounds within months/years. It is not completely true as recent studies have more optimistic results showing that most people that managed to lose weight keep it off for a long time or even never get it back again. So do not hesitate to lose weight, it’s worth trying!

Myth No.14 To lose weight I should work out more. More, more, more! Fact Really, workout like weightlifting is very good for metabolism that is responsible for losing weight, but too much is not good either. You should consult your doctor before starting the ‘hitting-the-gym’ campaign and he/she will help you with the optimal regime for your workout. If you are not recommended to do much workout, better decrease your gym encounters. There are so many other things to enjoy!

Myth No.15 If I cut fatty food, I can eat ‘low-fat’ food more. Fact Some people think that if they cut fatty food, they can allow themselves to increase ‘low-fat’ things and it will do no harm to their waists. In fact, fat reduction works only if we cut the calories we get as well, specialists say. So it is quite silly to compensate one regular cookie by two low-fat ones, they add.

Losing weight can be very long process and you can feel uncomfortable with it now and again. On the other hand, it is really worth trying as you ultimately get more than you effort. Try it now and get positive changes tomorrow!
