We are all pretty familiar with the words “viruses” and “bacteria”. These days there is hardly an adult person or even a child who does not realize what these tiny things are, what they can do, and why they are a danger for humans. Moreover, basic facts about them have been known and available for the masses for quite a long period of time.

Recently, the lexicon of an average person has been enriched with a new word – cholesterol. In the wink of an eye it became so popular that it can now be heard or read almost everywhere. Millions of people use this word; many of them, however, barely know what it actually means. Some are even scared of the mysterious cholesterol, as if it was a dangerous living being, similar to viruses and bacteria, capable of devastating the human body from the inside.

Those who are frightened by the word alone are only partially right. Cholesterol can be harmful; but not all, not always, and not for everyone.

These days scientists and physicians must take pains not only to warn people about the danger cholesterol poses to our bodies. They can provide patients with the broader spectrum of information.

To start with, everyone should realize what cholesterol actually is, what types of it scientists define, which type is harmful and which is not. It is of core importance to know when cholesterol becomes dangerous and why it turns into a risk factor for humans.

There are so many questions people may ask about the so popular word. There is so much information they are not aware of. There are so many facts that can be misinterpreted by a person, who is not good at medicine and science.
