Obesity: Choice or Disease

Obesity is a huge problem that concerns people of all the countries and nations. According to the World Health Organization, it is now an epidemic, because globally about 250 million adults are obese. Furthermore, children and adolescents are the victims of this curse as well.

It is strange but in a lot of cases of obesity it is quite difficult to define whether this state is a personal choice or a disease. What I mean is that obesity can be caused by objective (heredity, metabolism) and subjective (lifestyle) factors or their interaction.

Heredity or genes, metabolic and hormonal disorders are considered to be the main objective factors that contribute to the excessive weight gain. It is reported that these are the reasons of 70% to 80% of obesity cases. The worst thing is that they are the most difficult to treat. Exercising and diet are not enough– they will help lose some weight but insignificantly. Here the complex approach is necessary to break the spell.

It is not a myth that obesity tends to run in families. Scientists confirm that 80% of the offspring of two obese parents become obese too. In this case heredity seems to be a curse for both parents and children.

The matter is that some peculiar genes changed sometime ago and are now transferred in this state from one generation to the next. All in all seven different genes with mutation which causes obesity are now known to the scientists. Some of them are: melanocortin-4 receptor, which causes binge-eating syndrome (constant eating, always and everywhere); leptin; a gene for protein, etc.

Metabolism, which is a sum of peculiar processes of changing food into energy for human body, can also lead to obesity in case these processes are somehow impaired.

On the other hand, obesity is often rather a choice than a disease. Here the main precondition for it is the so called "Western lifestyle", when people lack exercising and physical activity. Jobs in the highly developed countries are mainly sedentary; people have a lot of labor-saving devices (transport, remote-control units, etc.). This all makes us lazy; we are not in a habit of using stairs instead of an elevator, participating in leisure-time activities, going in for sports.

Hunger is the only thing that we cannot get rid of. It haunts us like a wild animal and makes us surrender. As a result, we eat everywhere: on the street, in a bus, at work. It becomes a lifestyle.

We do not care what we eat, do not count calories; our aim is to escape from that savage creature. At the same time, we become reluctant to do some exercises or tired to go in for sports. No wonder that many people become obese in this environment. They choose this way of living, because it is easier to watch TV than to exercise in the gym, to take a nap than to participate in any leisure-time activities.

Nevertheless, it is necessary to make ourselves change our lifestyle in order to preserve health and beauty. Obese people can lose weight and improve health even in a case of irregular exercising. Walk to your work, do the household yourself, play with kids. If you combine it with a diet, the results will appear sooner. Remember: increase in activity is decrease in weight. And hunger… If we cannot kill it, let us cheat on it!
