Health Dangers of Obesity

Some people laugh saying that all the slim and well-shaped men and women are in the movies – all the rest are overweight. These days it does not seem so funny, on the contrary – it is a big problem for lots and lots of people. Furthermore, it is not a matter of beauty only, it is about health.

Due to various reasons more and more people become overweight or obese. Although these two notions seem to be similar, there is a difference between them. Taking into account the height and body frame of a person, scientists define his ideal weight. A few kilos plus to this number is called an overweight, while obesity is a state when a person weights 20% more than his ideal mass. Actually, this is the beginning of big problems.

It is a common knowledge that overweight and obesity cause much trouble to those who suffer from these things. You would say: “Yes, they look unpleasant; it is difficult for them to move, etc”. But this is only the wrapping, the things that we can see. At the same time, the most harmful changes take place inside the body of the obese person. Nationality, age, social state and gender do not matter - everyone can become obese; and obesity can cause the development of different diseases.

The tendency to be provoked by obesity is clearly observed with hypertension, the risk of which grows with age. The same is with cardiovascular disease, heart attack, stroke, coronary heart disease (especially when the weight gain started in childhood).

It is also a proved fact that diabetes of type 2 is tightly connected with obesity, since the latter increases insulin resistance and glucose intolerance, thus making diabetes treatment less effective. That is why 90% of people with diabetes type 2 are overweight or obese.

Persons with significantly greater weight inevitably have serious problems with liver, suffering from acute and steatohepatitis, leading to liver disease. Obesity is also among the risk factors for the development of gallbladder disease (especially when a rapid weight loss is observed). Gout and pancreatitis can be the result of obesity as well. In the case of gout the excessive fat provokes an increased production of uric acid but limits its removal from the body.

Undoubtedly, every person has at least once experienced a feeling of being tired to death and ready to fall asleep no matter where he is and what he is doing. It is reported that daytime sleepiness is even higher among obese individuals. Sleep apnea is also more severe in a more overweight person.

Obesity also influences the processes of blood flow through the veins - chronic venous insufficiency (especially in middle-aged and older men), and blood clotting, causing deep vein thrombosis, especially after surgery.

It seems arthritis is one of those diseases which inevitably arise in the obese people. Back, hips, hands and especially knees are very vulnerable to the overweight, because the pressure on the joints increases with the body mass.

One of the most terrible diseases of our days – cancer – targets the obese persons more often. These and many other diseases (heat disorders, impared immune response and infection of wounds, surgical complications, musculoskeletal disease, and depression) can be a result of excessive body weight.

One thing is clear: obesity is evil; a curse spread nowadays all over the world. But there is good news as well: it can be treated with the help of modern drugs (Xenical, for example) and with the change of lifestyle. Do not be too lazy to jog, to exercise. Remember – movement is life!
