Smoking Remains the Global Killer?

Earth is a battlefield; life is a struggle. We fight to achieve our goals, aims in life; to gain money, social status; to give birth to our offsprings; to get knowledge; to become famous… Fate is unpredictable and mean. It sends its killers to stop this struggle of ours; therefore, sometimes we fight just to live through.

Fate’s killers are known to us as our bad habits. One of them is smoking. Actually, this killer has little work to do: it does not chase us; it waits patiently till we find it. By some mysterious reason, like absolute masochists, we do, we consciously expose our body to killer’s fire. Why?

Each of us has his own explanation.

Some use it as an “upper” or adrenalin when they need more energy and strength while feeling tired and sleepy.

Some people need a cigarette to look tough and cool. They are too anxious about what others think of them. A cigarette helps them feel at ease with everybody. It is like a “security blanket”.

Many men and women simply get used to smoking. They do it unconsciously, without noticing it. They light a cigarette not realizing they have already one lit in the ashtray. It is just a habit.

Some others are addicted. They feel bad if they cannot smoke. To run out of cigarettes is a disaster for them.

A lot of people are nervous, intense, depressed. They smoke to relax. Cigarettes are magic sticks which help them forget everything and enjoy the trip to nirvana.

At last, many persons simply find smoking pleasurable. They like the smell, the taste, everything.

Smoking is a very peculiar killer. Unlike any other who targets victim’s heart or head, it tries to damage different parts of human body, watching and enjoying their pain like a real sadist. Or like a Middle Age inquisitor, it harms every organ slowly as if waiting for the culprit’s penance. And the latter comes, sooner or later.

But the trial is done. Punishment is waiting. The most terrible one is cancer (mouth, nose, throat, reproductive organs, stomach, bladder, liver – anything can be damaged). Nowadays up to 70 000 American women die per year from lung cancer caused by smoking, as doctors confirm. It is also reported that one out of three cancer deaths (among men and women) are related to smoking.

Heart attack, stroke, hypertension – this all can also be the price of smoking. This happens due to the narrowing of vessels and the enlarged blood clotting, caused by nicotine. Among adults 86 801 persons die from ischemic heart disease, caused by smoking.

The situation with narrowed vessels can also lead to the erectile dysfunction or impotence (blood cannot flow to the penis, thus to erect it) and mental degradation (also due to the decreased blood supply to the brain).

To my mind, one of the worst kinds of punishment the inquisitor can apply is health problems of a new-born baby whose parents smoke. Premature delivery, underweight or stillborn babies, sudden infant death syndrome (each year smoking during pregnancy results in 523 deaths among male infants and 387 deaths among female infants in the USA) – the list is incomplete. Maybe the executor is wrong in punishing an innocent child; nevertheless this is a price of parents’ irresponsibility. By the way, heavy smokers (men and women) often become infertile (though, it may be better than child’s suffering).

According to the World Health Organization reports, by 2030 one in six persons will be killed by smoking-the-killer if nothing changes. Let’s not watch this process, let us do something. And the best way is to quit smoking.
