Distrust Breaks Friendship

“Homo sapiens” we proudly call ourselves. Yeah, we certainly won’t die of shyness. I wonder whether any other creature in the Universe would call us this way. Hardly, I would say. No other living being makes so many stupid things as we do. No other creature behaves illogically and inconsistently so often. No other living thing is so ambitious having no the least reason for this.

There is no need to talk about the worst things people can do to their congeners, as murder or rape; lesser sins are enough to doubt whether we are really as clever as we claim ourselves to be. We lie and envy each other, make rumors and bear ill will to other people. We do not trust each other. Is this the way Homo sapiens are supposed to behave?

You may wonder what on Earth could have happened to me or who could have hurt me so much to make me feel so pessimistic about the human race. I am so sorry to acknowledge that I was not a victim, but an offender in the situation I am going to talk about.

I hurt my best friend.

I lost my best friend.

We shared a room in the college hostel. We seemed to be so alike: we listened to the same music, cited the same poets, enjoyed watching the same movies… Our friendship lasted for several years, and it seemed nothing could make us quarrel.

It thundered when my friend got some skin disease. She noticed rash on her arms and consulted a doctor. Her physician prescribed her some ointment to cover the affected area. The smell of the cream she used reminded me of the medication to treat scab. I once suffered from this contagious disease in the childhood. Though I did not remember exactly how the condition looked like, I could perfectly recall the disgusting smell of the medication.

Being blinded by the immense fear to get the disease again I did not believe my friend, when she explained that she had common non-contagious allergy. I called her a liar and insisted on her staying in the hospital during the treatment period.

I was so rude that I made my friend move out. I behaved like a typical representative of Mankind: suspicious, aggressive and cruel.

Every rule, however, has exceptions. Unlike me, my friend showed all the better features of a human being: in spite of all the anger and distrust I spitted on her in that situation, she continued communicating with me. She never said a word about that awful event. My friend never reproached or tried to remind me about my foolish behavior. However, nothing could wash away the deep feeling of shame and disgust I felt for myself.

Now I realize how wrong, how cruel and stupid I was. I did not believe the person who trusted me, who wanted to count on me, who treated me the best way. I let some silly skin condition ruin our friendship. It will never be the same again.

I heart my best friend.

I lost my best friend.
