Diabetes Prevention as One of Weight Loss Benefits

In attempt to decrease body mass people today stop before nothing: pills, herbal teas, diets, exercises or going without food at all. Excessive weight is a “sore point” for millions of them mostly because of appearance. Numerous studies proved that it is “sore” in the literal sense of the word for human’s body function.

A list of benefits of weight lose could be endless just as a number of health problems caused by obesity.

Having normal body mass you are less likely to have arthritis, angina, high blood pressure, gallstones, heart disease, and several types of cancer (of the uterus, ovary, breast, cervix, colon, prostate, gallbladder and rectum). Better fertility, increased energy level and mobility, prevention of the chest pains caused by decreased oxygen to the heart, lover cholesterol levels and longer life – all of these are also count in favour of weight loss.

Diabetes prevention is another matter which we’ll discuss in more detail.

Diabetes is a disorder characterised by increased level of sugar (glucose) in blood – hyperglycemia. Blood glucose level is regulated by insulin – a hormone which is produced by -cells in the pancreas in response to rising levels of glucose in the blood occurring after a meal. The main function of insulin is to make it possible for cells to remove glucose from the blood. It’s also some kind of control signal for conversion of glucose to glycogen (for storage in liver and muscles) and for reverse conversion when the level of insulin is low. Besides that higher insulin levels increase build up processes: cell growth, protein synthesis, fat storage.

If the level of insulin is low, not all glucose can be utilized by cells – blood and urine glucose levels are high. Such lack of insulin production is known as type 1 diabetes (insulin dependent). It’s cured with insulin injections or by pancreas replacement.

Diabetes of type 2 (non-insulin dependent) is more complicated because the level of insulin in the blood is enough but tissues lose responsiveness to it. Insulin in the blood couldn’t be used by cells and poisons the organism. It could be treated only by changing the lifestyle. Strict low calorie diet (to reduce glucose intake) and physical exercises (to burn stored in the muscles glycogen) can alleviate this form of disease. So weight loss cures and prevents type 2 diabetes.

Relation between diabetes and excessive body mass could be represented by next scheme: More weight → More energy needed → More food consumed → Higher level of glucose → Scarcity of insulin → Release of stored glycogen into blood → Higher level of glucose →…

To exit such a vicious circle - lose weight satisfying such requirements: 1) Stick to exact time, kind and amount of consumed food 2) Meet minimal nutritional requirements 3) Eat few enough calories to lose weight

To reach significant result, to lose a pound or two is not enough. Only 5-7% lost of body mass reduces the onset of non-insulin dependent diabetes by 58%.

If the information above you consider unnecessary as you don’t have any symptoms of diabetes despite your excessive weight, keep in mind that non-insulin dependent diabetes could proceed unnoticed even for years. So, don’t lose time, lose weight!
