It is hardly to contest a maxim that everything is good, when it happens in the right place. One of the most vivid demonstrations of this saying correctness is womens hair. Hair is the crown of female beauty, an undividable component of womens charm, and the object of mens admiration. But all these metaphors become vague, when hair appears in the places, where it is not supposed to appear.
There is a term in medicine, defining the condition, commonly known as unwanted facial hair. Doctors say it is hirsutism, when the thick, dark and coarse hair appears on upper lip, chin, cheeks, chest or back in women. We live in a world, where image and appearance play the role, which probably has never been so important before. Under such circumstances it is no wonder that modern women, living in the industrialized world, treat excessive facial hair as a real disaster, capable to destroy all their dreams and plans for present and future life.
Though hirsutism is usually explained by scientists as non-harmful for health, it is still an emotionally distressful disorder and very important cosmetic issue for women. Consequently, it is useful to know not only what the unwanted hair is, but also to understand the causes of this health disorder.
Mostly the disorder is explained by the abnormally high level of male hormone testosterone in women. By the way, excessive testosterone may cause not only appearance of terminal hair on the face, it may also result in acne, irregular menstrual periods, deepening of the voice and increased muscle mass in women.
It is the increase of testosterone, which raises the medical concerns about unwanted facial hair. The point is that sometimes such increase of male hormone in female body may signal about some other underlying diseases. Mostly doctors speak about polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), which may contribute to the excessive level of testosterone and development of hirsutism. Tumors in ovaries and adrenal glands may also be a reason for the disorder. In such cases hirsutism is not a disease, but a sign of some other more serious illness, thus it is recommended to visit a doctor for appropriate examination in case terminal hair appears in places, where it has not been seen earlier.
Along with the above described medical conditions, resulting in hirsutism, the latter may also develop without the underlying disease. Very often hirsutism occurs in families, thus women, whose mothers or grandmothers had excessive hair on their faces, are in greater risk of developing the same problem. Sometimes, hair follicles become too sensitive to testosterone and go crazy with no reason, starting to produce dark and coarse hair, instead of thin and almost invisible hair on the face.

Certain medications, such as anabolic steroids, danazol (Danocrine), metoclopramide (Reglan), methyldopa (Aldomet), phenothiazines, progestins or reserpine (Serpasil), may also disorientate female hair and make it grow in the wrong places.
Finally, in order to bring some cheerful notes into the description of hirsutims, I would underline that the condition is rather common (approximately 1 of 20 women suffers from it). At the meantime, hirsutism can be quite easily and effectively treated. The options for removing unwanted facial hair range from traditional shaving to brand-new cream Vaniqua and laser therapy. Nick
