Pure facts can no longer satisfy all the human curiosity in our time. People are seeking for causes and preconditions of certain events and phenomena, trying to find that very spark, which ignites the great fire.
That is the right way for civilization to develop. To comprehend not only the phenomenon itself, but to understand the actual reasons and preconditions for its appearance and development is of significant importance, especially when we talk about the human health and its disorders.
Erectile dysfunction (ED), commonly known as impotence is one of such health problems. It is interesting that this issue started to be discussed only in 90s of the previous century, though its importance is hard to overestimate. Indeed, erectile dysfunction concerns processes which are essential for reproduction of Mankind.
To understand the nature of erection and to find the causes of ED these are the most important tasks of urologists, sexologists and pharmacists nowadays.
Earlier people used the term impotence to show the inability of a man to have sexual intercourse with a woman. Now people use "erectile dysfunction" to name the condition when a man is not able to start and/or maintain the penis erection, which is necessary for sexual intercourse.
Some time ago scientists explained impotence as the inevitable part of aging; now they found actual causes, leading to erectile dysfunction and invented effective remedies to treat this condition.
So, speaking about causes of ED, scientists define two groups of them: physical and psychological. According to the latest research, psychological factors are more typical for the ED cases in younger people, while those who are above 40 are more subjected to the influence of physical causes of erectile dysfunction.
Statistics says that 80- 90% of all cases of ED have physical factors as the underlying causes for the development of this disorder. The most important among them are:
heart diseases; diseases of blood vessels; diabetes; alcoholism; smoking; damage of spinal cord and nerves; certain drugs and surgery; decreased level of male hormones.
These causes are called physical because they affect the physical processes in organism, such as blood flow or nerve impulses transition, which are essential for the erection.
Though the lifestyle issues such as chronic alcoholism or heavy smoking do not cause ED directly, but they lead to certain changes in organs and systems, resulting in malfunction of the normal erection process. For example, alcohol can lead to nerve damages or arteries narrowing, resulting in many health problems, including the erectile dysfunction.
So, taking into account the physical nature of erectile dysfunction, all men should do their best not to expose their organisms to the above said causes and thus threat the continuation of the human kind.
