How Does Erection Occur and Why?

Nowadays every child, aged 10-11, knows what sex is. I would not say it is good, but it's certainly better than practicing sex at this age, knowing, actually, the word only and nothing else. Adults, on the other hand, know much more about sex, but mostly in practice (here "but" doesn't mean "unfortunately"!). And what about the theory, some general terms, for example?

Let us speak about erection, which is a key part of sexual intercourse between a man and a woman. I think each man should know what is going on with his genital organ when it rises, and why, in general, it happens? Certainly, the following information won't be useless for women either: maybe it will help avoid some unpleasant situations...

Now let's widen our knowledge in a sexual sphere. To start with, it may be quite difficult for an ordinary person (not a scientist) to understand all the processes, happening in the human body. Still, it is possible to describe some of them in simple words without going into multiple scientific terms.

Erection (from Latin "erigo, erectum" - to rise, to erect) is the enlargement and hardening of the penis, which allows to fulfill a sexual intercourse. Erection of the penis is provided by its filling with blood, because the arteries that bring blood to the male sexual organ widen and thus deliver more blood to it. At the same time the veins that take blood away from the penis decrease in size, therefore, removing less blood from the penis, which prevents it from relaxation.

Usually, erection occurs in response to sexual stimulation, which also causes the production and release of nitric oxide in the penis. Therefore, to reach an erection partners should "work" a little. I mean not just physical stimulation of the penis but the creation of the appropriate atmosphere (you know - a cozy warm room, candles, half darkness...), because psychological factor is of no less importance.

In fact, scientists define 6 types of psychological impulses, which cause the erection. They are: auditory irritators (music, laugh, frequent breathing); sense of smell (a pleasant smell of clean skin or clean hair...); taste irritators (a taste of genitals' secretion); touch (a massage, for example); imagination (dreams, memories, fantasies) and various visual irritators. All of them are very important and, as the scientists confirm, if none of these impulses works the erection may be very weak, thus being insufficient for fulfilling a sexual intercourse or it may not occur at all. Frequent situations, when a man cannot reach erection, are known under the name of erectile dysfunction (some time ago doctors used to call this disease “impotence”).

Sometimes erectile dysfunction is due to psychological problems, especially in younger men. It can be the result of fear of a failure, especially if a man has already experienced it once or twice. Actually, psychological factor is the cause of about 10% of all erectile dysfunction cases. In such situations women can help a lot: by calming the partner, instilling self-confidence in him, etc… (Maybe physically women are a weak sex, but not spiritually!). No doubt, the connection between erection and psyche should not be underestimated. So, when your woman tells you not to be nervous, it already means something.

Now, here is another aspect of the same topic. Sometimes erection may occur when you do nothing for it and don't even think about it because... you are asleep! It happens mostly when a man/boy suffers from the lack of sex, but sometimes even when he doesn't. It's normal if it's not accompanied by pain. However, if this process is very painful and wakes you up at night it may be a sign of a disease, which is called priapism (note that its sources are also connected with psyche). Besides pain, this disease is also accompanied with too frequent and too prolonged erections even without sexual arousal. Some stupid men dream about such a "gift", not realizing that it is really a great problem for those who already have this "gift". A doctor is the best friend in such a situation.
