Types of Erectile Dysfunction

Wise men say that everything has its cause. To understand a cause of a problem, for example, means to be half way to its solution. In medicine this rule works perfectly; therefore, to understand a cause of a disease is to be half way to healing it.

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a state that can be triggered by several reasons, according to which professionals define several types of the disease. Consequently, the healing of each ED type can differ at some points, requiring a help of a psychologist in some cases or a surgeon in the others.

It is worthy to note that ED can be either primary or secondary. The primary one is due to the endocrine and nervous systems disorders existing from the birth of a person or maldevelopment of the genitals. In the case of this type of impotence a man has never been able to achieve and sustain an erection. Secondary ED is achieved at some point of the life of a person under the additional circumstances as age, injury, health disorders, etc.

Nowadays scientists name all in all 7 main types of ED.

Arteriogenic erectile dysfunction is caused by the narrowing of the arteries in the penis. This results in the decreased blood inflow to it, thus making erection impossible. This type of ED usually takes place in older or diabetic persons or those with high blood pressure. In young men the main reason for the development of arteriogenic ED is the injury to the genital region. It is common to the bicycle and other riders. In the case of accident usually the most obvious wounds and fractures are healed with paying little or no attention to the erectile function of the penis. The development of ED is often noticed much later by the patient himself, not a doctor.

Venogenic ED is characterized by the leak of blood out of the penis during an erection. Therefore, the latter does appear, but a man cannot sustain it. In the usual situation blood flows to the penis and the veins are almost completely closed down, raising the pressure in order to create the hardness and rigidity of the penis.

The cases of venogenic impotence are very common: up to 70% of all cases. This type of ED can be either primary or secondary.

Neurogenic ED. The delicate nerves in the penis are those triggers that initiate and maintain an erection, activating and altering the blood flow in the man’s organ. They are extremely fragile. It is usually the injury that makes the right process go wrong. The nerves in the penis can be harmed in the back or pelvic traumas. Incidental injuries can happen during the operations performed to the other conditions on rectum, prostate, urethra, spine, urinary bladder, etc. Nervous system disorders, involving nerves in the penis can also lead to the development of ED. Myelitis and sclerosis are among the most common. Diabetes is one more disease that almost inevitably leads to impotence, since it also affects penile nerves.

Endocrinologic ED develops if there is a disorder in the sex hormones in the blood stream or if there are any diseases associated with the hormonal changes in the organism (hypo- and hyperthyroidism, pituitary tumor, etc). Estimated 5 to 10% of secondary ED cases are of endocrinologic nature.

Psychogenic ED happens due to different psychological disorders, starting with low self-esteem and depression and finishing with the severest conditions. Troubled relationships, anxiety, fear of performance, psychological traumas in the childhood provoke the development of psychogenic ED.

Mixed type of impotence is said to be the most common. It is characterized by the existing of more than one reason for the ED development. Mostly it includes the combination of organic and psychological causes.

Drug-induced ED is not rare these days. A lot of medications aimed in healing some health disorder can trigger the development of ED by affecting the central nervous system. Anti-hypertensives and psychotropics are among the most dangerous for the erectile function.
