Wrinkles – how do they appear and why?

Lines of different size and depth, straight or bent, temporary or permanent wherever situated on our face or body we used to call in a one word – wrinkles. It scares women after 30 and gives good money to developers and sellers of anti aging means. Being the first sign of aging wrinkles always were the matter to fight with.

What exactly wrinkles are, why young people don’t have wrinkles, how and when do they appear, causes and treatment of wrinkles – a short list of questions this article is to answer to.

“A wrinkle is a ridge or crease of a surface” - a definition given by Wikipedia for wrinkles no matter which surface they appear on. Medical encyclopedia calls wrinkles “visible creases in the skin”.

The advent of wrinkles is mostly associated with aging process, but among causes of wrinkles photodamage, facial muscle contraction, smoking, bad environment, stress and genetic predisposition are always mentioned.

Young skin has elastin, which provides elastic qualities, skin protein collagen and sebum – the skin’s natural oil in enough amounts. With age the number of oil and sweat glands decreases, skin blood vessels become fragile, the layer of fat under the skin and skin itself become thinner, elastin and collagen are lost – all of these are good conditions for wrinkle formation.

One of the mechanisms of wrinkling could be described by next scheme: damage of collagen and elastin -> skin produces special enzymes to reshape the collagen -> new collagen fibers are laid down in uneven patterns -> when this process happen over and over malformed collagen leads to wrinkles.

The field of prevention, diagnosis and treatment of wrinkles is experiencing a stage of high speed development now. World “wrinkle market” recently proposed to customers new technology based on white-light digital imaging called Clarity Pro that can measure number, depth and severity of wrinkles.

Physicists from Harvard University developed a theory of wrinkles for different fibers including facial skin. If you know the dimensions of the fabric and the forces acting on it, the theory predicts the amplitude and the wavelength of the resulting wrinkles—that is, how big and how far apart they will be. Among common means for treatment wrinkles should be mentioned such of them: • ablative and non-ablative laser treatment • microdermabrasion • botulinum toxin (Botox) • skin filler (collagen or hyaluronic acid) • chemical peel • face lift, eye-lid surgery

After reading of all these you can imaging how rich our world for wrinkles and ways to cope with them. Smile, scream, make faces as your please and don’t afraid to become wrinkled some day, you will for sure, but along with all of us.
