How does Zyban Work?

Have you ever caught yourself on a thought that sometimes we are deeply interested in how certain things work and sometimes we are absolutely indifferent to the basic principles of other things’ functioning?

For example, when buying a new TV set in the store, most people will not be interested in principles of TV signals transmission and methods of their interpretation by TV set – here we just want a device to entertain us and show our favorite films or football matches. I would say that buying a TV set (as well as most of other consumer goods) we just buy a final result itself.

The situation is absolutely different with medications. Buying a drug or consulting a doctor on the available treatment options to cure any disease or disorder in our organism, we are highly interested in the actual mechanism of drug’s influence on our body. Sometimes the list of side effects may become the crucial point in choosing this pill or that .

I think that such situation can be easily explained – medications are things that we put inside of our organisms and they affect our organs and systems; when they do something wrong, we cannot throw them away like a broken TV set.

Let us take Zyban for example. This drug with a medical name bupropion hydrochloride is a FDA approved prescription medication to help people quit smoking. Its effectiveness is approved by multiple clinical tests and for those, who want a quick answer for the question: “Does Zyban work?” I would say: “Yes, it does. Zyban really helps people quit smoking habit”.

Below I will try to satisfy the curiosity of other readers – those, who want to know the answer for another question: “How does Zyban work?”

The first fact I would like to underline is that people have not yet cleared out the basic reasons and mechanism of smoking as the nicotine addiction. That is why the full explanation of Zyban role in fighting with the most dangerous bad habit is currently under the scope of deep scientific research: -(

Meanwhile, Zyban really helps people quit smoking and scientists consider it to be due to the nature of Zyban as an antidepressant. It helps people overcome the cravings and smoking withdrawal symptoms: irritability, frustration, anxiety, anger and depression, which are often the main reasons to restart smoking.

Zyban helps overcome such conditions, setting balance in certain substances in human brain, which are responsible for addiction process. These substances are dopamine and norepinephrine. Affecting them, Zyban reduces the nicotine addiction as well as the cravings and withdrawal symptoms.

Undoubtedly, Zyban is the progressive option to treat nicotine addiction, but it won’t help without strong will and firm decision of smoker himself. One should make a personal choice to walk on the road of quitting smoking and Zyban only helps make this road shorter and easier to walk.

Hi, Just thought you should know that Zyban has worked for me without any other aid (as in patches, gum, inhalers or lozenges). I tried to quit in 2008 and failed - big time - but I was using patches. I'm no expert, but it was as though my body KNEW that I was substituting one form of nicotine for another, and as soon as the patches stopped (and the gum, I might add - thrown in for good measure) I started smoking again. I never thought that I could quit, as I've been smoking since I was 14 and I'm approaching my 52nd birthday, but with Zyban, I have. I cannot remember the last time I wanted to smoke - the only reason that I came onto this website was to find out about the "supposed" site effects. I have some pills left, but not many - around six or so days. To be honest, I have suffered from palpatations, especially at night, in bed, when you can't concentrate on anything else. So for anyone, who thinks that Zyban is any easy trip, no, it's not, but if you can live with the fast heart beat in bed, when it's quiet, then go for it. I believe that I know enough now, and I've got enough support from my partner, parents, work colleagues and GP (who told me that if I wanted to NOT smoke again, I had to never be flippant and take a drag of someone elses), I can at least carry on, or try not to, or be happy in the fact that I will be slapped if I don't!!!

Been a heavy smoker for like 25 years or so. My nature is extremely addictive, and I was up to 2 packs + a day.
I doubted that Zyban would work, because I had tried almost everything. But one thing I did know for a fact. I wanted to stop smoking so badly, it hurt.
I tried Zyban as prescribed, carrying on smoking for two weeks, and I then stopped dead as planned. Viola! It definitely works. But like the article says. It doesn't make it easy to stop, but it does make it "easier". Cravings are much more manageable.
Because I'm a tempered, moody SOB at times, I found that taking a mild natural sedative helped lower anxiety levels.
No serious side-effects other than peculiar mood swings, and strange dreams. But I could deal with it.
I've tried so many times before, and with Zyban, I experienced success for the first time in my smoking life.

I have been an on again, off again smoker for 20+ years. For the past 5 years I have been smoking pretty heavily. I have tried the patch on two separate occasions with no success. I finally decided to try Zyban. I am positively floored at how I feel. I only started taking the Zyban one week ago. My doctor told me to plan my quitting date for 2 weeks because that is when the medication reaches its full effect. Well on my 5th day, I woke up and didn't really want a cigarette. In fact I basically forgot about smoking until later in the day. Today is day 7 and I finally gave up. I just really don't want to smoke. The prospect of smoking for one more week is really off putting to me, it seems like a real chore because I have totally lost interest in it. I find myself completely amazed at how I feel because smoking had become such a part of who I am. First thing I did each morning and last thing I did before bed each night. I had a few cigs left in a pack but I tossed them in the garbage tonight. No sense smoking for one more week just to make it to the 2 week goal. I feel done now, so I am gonna just quit. I am keeping my fingers crossed that I continue to feel this way.

I'm 26 years old and have been smoking since I was about 13 or 14. I never cared to quit until I noticed it was affecting my health. I'm not longer energetic and playful, I'm more of a "drag" on my friends. I decided years ago that I wanted to quit- but every time I make the leap, I fall..
So I started taking Zyban. As of today it'll be my first week. I have no idea what to expect, I've been reading online hoping to hear other people's experiences and I'm happy that I found this site. The only side effect I seem to be suffering from is insomnia. I just can't sleep at night. But I'm not exactly tired the next morning.. My morning cravings has weakened. I'm pushing myself each day seeing how far I go without freaking right out. I intend to stick with smoking for the next week as I was told to do, because I don't feel ready to quit right now.. But I DO believe that Zyban is working for me, and I'm looking forward to starting a new life and taking better care of myself

Day 1
I started Zyban on the 16-11-11 my eldest son's birthday.
Wednesday morning was my first - that day at work I felt a little fuzzy in the head. (Not sure if it was the pill or just me hehehehe).

Day 2
Thursday I felt calm, contented and happy. I am still smoking but don't like the taste - down to 16 that day – drink 1.5 litres of water and went for a 30 min walk.

Day 3
Same as Day 2

Day 4
Same as Day 2 and 3 expect I went on 2 a day and took it at 4pm.
It felt is though I did not sleep – but did not feel alarmed until around 5.30am then at 6am got up.

Day 5
It is now my 5th day on Zyban.
On 2 a day – I did not sleep well last night but it was not unbearable. Got up at 6am mouth was dry – I had a cuppa tea – so nice – I am still smoking – really wanted one this morning so I had 3.
I still have the feeling of calmness and contentment which is so nice.
As the day went on I got it back under control but smoked 18. Drink 1 litre of water and a 30 min walk.
It is now 6.30 pm and I feel if I lay down I would go straight to sleep.
Going to hang off until 9.30 the earliest.. Went to sleep at 10pm had a great sleep – wake at 2.30am had a drink of water then went back to sleep until 7am.

Day 6
Got up at 7am and feeling a bit shaky not bad but feel it there. Mental felt great waited 1 ½ hours up before my 1st smoke and it was not hard. I had 11 smokes to day.
I still feeling a little shaky but nothing to alarm myself about. When I have a smoke it still tastes bitter – I am so please about that because after a couple of puffs I go yak that taste terrible.

Day 7
Did not sleep well last night – Went to bed at 9.30pm – last time I looked at the clock it was 11.30pm – Then again at 2.30am then again at 5.30 then again at 6.30 got up.
Had these anxious feeling in my stomach wanting a smoke – I did so well the day before – sad I have had 5 smokes this morning and it is only 10am.
I tried ironing to take my mind off things.
Am going to have a shower and get ready for work.
I still feeling quite shaky.
I have tried looking for a support group online but can not find one.
Back from work it is 5pm only have had 10 so far so all good from this morning.
I have taken a neoren Plus to help me sleep. See what happens
It is 8pm and had my last smoke at 7pm.
Quit day 2 morrow I hope

Day 8 7pm 22-11-11 last smoke forever………
Slept much better last night – just wake up at 2.30am had a drink of water and went back to sleep then 5.30am got up at 6am. – no dry mouth this morning.
Did every thing I usually do have my lovely cuppa tea and then my coffee about 30 min later sat where I normally set and it was wonderful breathing in the fresh air listening to the birds singing. No smoking. Life could not get better for me, this is great – we will see how the rest of the day goes.
5 pm home from work – had 3 times that I really wanted to have a smoke – but made a coffee and went for a walk – that worked. Feel a bit tried now so hope I sleep tonight. Still feeling shaky.

Yah Yah pat myself on the back – still have not had a smoke for 24 hrs.

Day 9
I slept well. Wake up at 6am took my magic pill Got up at 7.30am
Had my cuppa tea and then my coffee – it is now 8.45am and no cravings but notice that that I am still a bit shaky.
I read lots of stories of people giving up on the computer and that seems to help.
5pm Back from work- good day at work no big hunger pains. I always have that hunger for a smoke when I get home from work – have a coffee do some deep breathing and it comes OK - I feel really tried.

Yah Yah pat myself on the back – still have not had a smoke for 48 hrs.
