Quitting Smoking with Nicotine Inhaler

In spite of risk to change one kind of dependence to another, using nicotine replacement products, it’s really popular way to quit smoking. “Clean” nicotine (without the tar and carbon monoxide) delivered to the bloodstream is needed in fewer amounts than from a cigarette and cause less number of health problems.

One of the most popular means of nicotine replacement therapy is nicotine inhalator (or inhaler). It’s a device, which looks very much like a cigarette and consists of a plastic cylinder containing a cartridge that delivers nicotine when you puff on it.

An absorption of nicotine vapor in mouth and throat area leads to fast coming of nicotine to the blood and produce a sensation of cigarette puff.

Each cartridge delivers up to 400 puffs of nicotine vapor (1 cigarette = 80 puffs) and 4 mg of nicotine. Maximum allowed daily dose is 16 cartridges. The medicine is available only by prescription and cost on average $45/42 cartridges.

The therapy contemplates reduction of used cartridges per day during treatment course and rejection of nicotine products after no more than 6 months.

Besides common side effects caused by nicotine products (high blood pressure, nausea, dizziness, hearing problems, upset stomach, bad headaches, vomiting, cold sweats, weakness or fainting, drooling, blurred vision or vivid dreams) there are some specific, concerned with the way of nicotine delivery: irritation of the lining of the mouth, dry mouth, flushing, oral ulcers.

Usual precautions are applied to pregnant and breast-feeding women, persons with heart disease or other specific medical problems and children under 18.

To avoid objectionable drug interaction consult your physician before start using nicotine inhaler if you are taking some of these chemicals: bupropion, insulin, propoxyphene, propranolol, theophyline, warfarin. High speed of action and cigarette-like appearance of nicotine inhaler make it efficient for both physical and physiological aspects of smoking. At the same time this form of nicotine replacement therapy is very visible method of stopping smoking.

A mouthpiece needs cleaning several times a week by raising it in water for hygienic purposes and is assigned for using by only one person.

All nicotine products are sensitive to heat, so store it below 30 degrees C in places inaccessible for children and pats.
