Differin – the Third Generation of Retinoids in the Fight against Acne
People are fighting with acne since ancient times. A lot of treatment options, including both herbal remedies and pharmaceutical means, have been developed by people to treat this not life-threatening, but, definitely, life-worsening disease. During the past decades retinoids, a group of chemical substances derived from naturally-occurring Vitamin A, proved themselves as the most effective, safe and widely-used medicinal tools to fix acne-affected skin.

Retin-A is, perhaps, the most vivid example of retinoid family, being used by millions of people around the globe to treat acne. However, Retin-A belongs to the first generation of retinoids, and nowadays we have the third generation of retinoids developed and used in dermatology. Differin gel – this is the modern medication, which combines all the beneficial values of Vitamin A with the latest achievements of pharmaceutical science.

Differin , being now a number one prescription medication against acne, was developed by Galderma Company. There are three variants of this medication: regular strength gel (0.1 %), increased power gel (0.3 %), and cream with 0.1 % of active ingredient. All the medications have adapalene as the key component and all are indicated for topical use only. The only difference is that stronger gel is recommended for more serious forms of acne, and cream is usually prescribed for patients with sensitive skin (gel is said to have more skin drying action).

Explaining the mode of action of Differin , scientists say that the medication works by modulating skin cell differentiation and growth, which in its turn results in oil production regulation and consequent reduction of acne over a long period of time. Besides, Differin has both exfoliating and anti-inflammatory effects.

Using Differing cream is a pretty simple operation. There are three steps one should perform to feel the healing properties of Differin . These steps are the following:

1)      Wash your skin before applying Differin
It is advised to use cream before bedtime. So, wash your hands thoroughly and cleanse your skin with a mild non-soap cleanser and rinse it with warm water.

2)      Dry your skin
No special comments are required for this operation – just take a soft clean towel and gently dry your skin.

3)      Apply Differin
Here one should be accurate and use Differin exactly as ordered by a doctor, who prescribed the medication. Usually, patients are advised to use a pea-sized amount of Differin gel or cream. Put medication on your finger and dot it on the forehead, cheeks and chin. Spread the cream over the entire face, avoiding areas near eyes and lips, where skin is especially sensitive and can be easily irritated.

Here is one important note about using Differin : sometimes we are tempted to accelerate the healing process by using medication more frequently or in larger amounts then it is prescribed. In case with Differin this seems to be a bad idea, because larger amounts of the medication can easily cause skin irritation or even some allergic reactions. As the result – a new skin problem in addition to acne may appear.

Another issue referring Differin is that during early days of treatment acne may become worse. This does not mean that medication works in some wrong way – it is just a sign that the medication has already started its hard job on cleaning and purifying your skin.
It is also worth mentioning that treating acne with Differing may take up to 12 weeks, so get some patience and prepare yourself for the new life without acne… or with the visible improvements of your skin health at least :-)
