Hiring a Personal Fitness Trainer?

A decade ago, having a personal fitness trainer was considered a luxury reserved for only those in Hollywood. But take a look around your health club, and you’ll notice more and more common folk using the services of a certified personal fitness trainer. There’s no doubt that the right personal trainer can help you achieve your fitness goals, but how do you know whom to hire? Use these five questions as a guide.

Are you certified?

Be sure the trainer has successfully completed a reputable personal fitness trainer certification program. There isn’t a national certification standard, so certification program requirements vary a great deal. Some are weekend workshops, while others demand months of study and culminate in a several hour written and practical exam.

Ask the trainer what organization they received their certification through, and what the program required. Do a little web research on the organization. Be sure the trainer has current CPR and First Aid certification too. And remember, just because they have a killer body does not mean they are trained to design safe and effective fitness programs.

Do you have a specialty?

While many personal trainers work with people having a wide variety of needs, some chose to specialize in working with a specific population. For instance, one personal trainer may specialize in increasing muscle mass, while another may specialize in pre-natal fitness. Look for a certified trainer who has experience handling needs similar to yours.

If you have a medical condition that requires special attention, be sure to mention this to the trainer during your first meeting. A professional trainer will value your openness and direct you to a trainer that can accommodate your condition if they’re unable to do so.

Can you provide references?

Ask the trainer for at least two references. A reputable certified personal trainer will be more than willing to provide this information. Have a short list of questions ready to ask the reference. Avoid questions like “how did you get those killer abs?” and focus on basics like “was the trainer on time and dependable?”

What’s expected?

Having a clear understanding of expectations before you begin your fitness program will help limit misunderstandings that can result in disappointment. Find out how your current fitness level will be evaluated, and how you can expect your progress to be measured. Ask the certified trainer what level of support you can count on from them, and what level of commitment they expect from you.

A good personal fitness trainer will appreciate your directness, and see that you are serious about reaching your goals.

Do we click?

Finally, perhaps one of the most important questions to ask is “do we click?” If you don’t feel comfortable with the personal trainer, politely thank them for their time, and talk to a few others. Your relationship with your personal trainer is indeed personal! So don’t settle.

You’ll see greater progress with a trainer you feel a connection with.
