All the things in this world emerge as the results of combination of factors collaborating together. Nothing has a simple reason, the only cause, and a single trigger. The state of our health is made of multiple factors as well; and the development of the diseases is always explained by the influence of various reasons.
The sufferers of cardiovascular illnesses know these postulates better than other people. Those who suffer from lipid disorders, which are so frequent today, are aware of them from the first day they have learned about their conditions. In millions of cases lipid disorders, which include high levels of triglycerides and bad cholesterol and low rates of the good one, work together to disrupt the health of a sufferer.
No wonder, modern medicine is constantly enriched with the new medications, which combine more than one active ingredient. Such combination drugs are developed in order to ensure better results of the therapies, which are aimed at treating several aspects or eliminating a few factors of the disease at once.
Simcor is a medication, which is capable of fighting the three-headed monster with the first head being high level of triglycerides, the second one being high bad cholesterol, and the third head – low level of good cholesterol. The combination of two active ingredients – extended-release niacin (Niaspan) and simvastatin – allows the drug to work on lowering elevated levels of such lipids as triglycerides and low-density lipoprotein (LDL), which are harmful if present in large amounts, promoting at the same time the increase in the useful and necessary high-density lipoprotein (HDL).
Simcor is used in patients, who require such a three-fold therapy, having imbalance in all the three types of lipids, and for whom diet with small amounts of saturated fat and cholesterol does not seem to work.
Simvastatin component in the drug is aimed mainly at lowering bad cholesterol by blocking its production. However, it does not show high efficacy at increasing HDL – a type of fat in blood, which is crucial for the normal functioning of the body.
Common side effects of simvastatin are headache, back and joint pain, abdominal cramps, upset stomach, nausea and vomiting, weakness and muscle aches. The last adverse reaction should be paid special attention to, as it may rarely be a sign of the condition called rhabdomyolysis – a very rare but serious disease, which results in the breakdown of the skeletal muscle tissue and kidney failure.
Niacin is a naturally occurring vitamin B3. It is proven to lower triglycerides levels, and what is more important, it can raise HDL or good cholesterol level. Niacin may cause dizziness, rapid heartbeat, shortness of breath and sweating. However, the most troublesome side effect of niacin is flushing, which usually occurs in two hours after the drug administration. In order to minimize the unpleasant feelings associated with this adverse reaction, Simcor is recommended to be taken before bedtime.
Not all the patients may be allowed to undergo the treatment with Simcor: for example, pregnant, breastfeeding, and women who intend to become pregnant should not take this drug, because it may cause birth defects and harm the nursing baby. In general, lipid levels of pregnant women differ from those which are defined as optimal or healthy, since they are produced in the body for two – for mother and for the developing baby.

People suffering from liver and kidney diseases, active stomach ulcers and gout, as well as patients with diabetes may be either contraindicated to use Simcor, or will need dose adjustment to avoid side effects occurrence and concomitant illnesses aggravation.
In spite of some inconveniences a patient will have to put up with while taking Simcor, this drug is, undoubtedly, an optimal problem solving of lipid disorders treatment, as it allows to aim at three targets at once with a convenient once-daily regimen.
