What to Do about Dandruff?

Small white flakes, especially noticeable on the dark hair or on black suite, may definitely become quite a nasty surprise. Yes, dandruff often behaves like an uninvited guest, choosing the most inappropriate place and time for the appearance. Besides, it can be pretty challenging to get rid of dandruff. However, there are still options to escape from it.

First of all, it should be noted that from the medicinal point of view dandruff is not a serious health issue at all. It is just some excessive shedding of dead skin cells from the scalp and nothing more. However, this could be difficult to explain to your date or to your own inner ego. That is why if you are faced with dandruff problem, arm yourself with the knowledge on the available solutions.

The major weapon against dandruff is shampoo, but not every shampoo can be effective against the disorder. Only those specially designed for this purpose can be of help, because they contain certain chemical ingredients, which help to get rid of dandruff.

In order to deal with mild dandruff zinc pyrithione shampoos are recommended as the first-line option. Here belong Selsun Salon, Head & Shoulders, Denorex Daily Protection and other widely-known shampoos. The active ingredient of those shampoos inhibits the growth of the particular type of fungus (P. Ovale), which normally lives on the human scalp skin, but sometimes becomes too active causing dandruff symptoms.

Coal tar is also used as the option to fight dandruff. Here the point is that under normal condition scalp skin cell lifecycle lasts for about a month, but dandruff means that those cells grow, become mature and die much quicker (within about 2-7 days). Coal tar works like a longevity elixir for skin cells on the scalp – it slows down the process of cells aging and dying, thus reducing the chances of dandruff to appear.

Salicylic acid is another ingredient which turns “normal” shampoo into “anti-dandruff” one. This ingredient works like a scrub, helping to clean the scalp and eliminate all the dead cells from the surface of the scalp. The examples of salicylic acid shampoos are Ionin, Denorex Extra Strength Protection, Demarest, etc. This type of shampoos is recommended for eliminating more stubborn cases of dandruff.

Selenium sulfide shampoos (such as Selsun Blue) works similarly to the above mentioned anti-dandruff agents, slowing down the speed of skin cells growth and killing some fungus, which may contribute to the development of dandruff. However, here is one important note about this kind of remedies – selenium sulfide may discolor blond, gray or chemically colored hair. So, rinsing well after shampooing is highly recommended.

Finally, when all the above mentioned options failed and dandruff continues to enjoy spoiling one’s life – it is time to use the most effective weapon against dandruff. Ketoconazole shampoos (Nizoral) are considered to be the most effective option against dandruff. It contains antifungal agent with the broad spectrum of action, so it can eliminate practically any fungus, which causes moderate to severe cases of dandruff. These shampoos are still available over-the-counter.

So, as one can see, there is a wide range of treatments, capable of taking care of small, white scaly intruders. Besides, do not underestimate the role of healthy eating and stress management for fixing many health conditions, including dandruff.
