How Imodium Treats Diarrhea in People with IBS
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a specific disorder, which requires different treatment options depending on the type of the condition.

Diarrhoea-predominant IBS is characterised with such symptom as frequent and watery stool. To relieve this condition Imodium capsules are often used and seem to be effective and safe for the majority of patients.

Imodium main working ingredient loperamide is aimed at slowing the intestinal movement and improving salt and water absorption from the intestinal content. It acts in the small intestine and decreases its muscle activity.

Patients should not be worried about loperamide chemical composition, which is somehow related to narcotics (for example, morphine), since it does not possess any of their pain-relieving properties and does not cross the blood-brain barrier.

At the same time, scientists admit that Imodium ingredients depress central nervous system, thus it should still be used with caution, not exceeding the recommended dose. Overdose may cause drowsiness and result in the inhibiting of gastric acids production, thus interfering with normal food digestion.

In general, this anti-diarrhoeal medication is characterised with low incidence of side effects, which mainly take place if the drug is taken over the long periods of time for managing chronic diarrhoea and IBS. The most common adverse reactions are abdominal pain, nausea, bloating, and constipation. Dry mouth is one more event observed with the use of Imodium; that is why it is recommended to drink plenty of water during the therapy.

It is worthy to note that the treatment of acute diarrhoea usually takes not more than two days if a patient takes Imodium. Maintenance therapy of chronic diarrhoea linked to IBS should not exceed 10 days. Then the interval should be made in order to avoid side effects.

In general, the initial dose of Imodium is 2 capsules, followed by one capsule after each unformed stool. Elderly do not require dose adjustments; however, kids do depending on the age. Children under two years of age are not allowed to take Imodium.

Similarly, pregnant and breastfeeding women are not recommended to use this drug, unless the expected results overweigh the possible risks. People who have intestinal infection or suffer from diarrhoea due to colitis should not take loperamide.

Imodium is associated with only a few drug interactions. It increases the sedative effect of alcohol, tranquilizers, and sleeping pills. In addition, it may provoke severe colitis if used with clindamycin and lincomycin.

Imodium has been available for people seeking for anti-diarrhoeal measures since the late 70s of the previous century. Its history of use proved its safety and effectiveness. This drug still remains a popular option of diarrhoea treatment today.
