Amitiza - the First FDA-approved Treatment of Irritable Bowel Syndrome with Constipation
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common digestive disorder nowadays. In most cases it does not cause serious changes or consequences in the human organism; however, it definitely may spoil the comfort of living, making a person suffer from such symptoms as abdominal pain, bloating, gas, constipation or diarrhoea.

Perhaps, the most interesting fact about IBS is that in spite of the statistics, saying that up to 20% of Americans suffer from this illness, there was no medical treatment for this condition until recently. In fact, in April 2008 the American Food and Drug Administration approved Amitiza -the very first medication, legally approved for the treatment of Irritable bowel syndrome.

However, against a background of such a good news as the approval of the first pill against IBS come a few notes – Amitiza cannot treat any type of IBS – it is only suitable for treating irritable bowel with constipation as the predominating symptom; plus – Amitiza is not for everyone – only women 18 years and older can get the benefits of the treatment with Amitiza. Surely, these notes are presented here not with the aim to diminish the importance of Amitiza approval, they are only to make everything clear about Amitiza and about how, when and whom it can help. Well, that’s enough with the flies, let’s talk about honeyJ

Though Amitiza is approved only for women, it is also a fact that women suffer from IBS symptoms much more often than men. Besides, clinical studies showed that Amitiza provides medical effect only when taken by women (the efficacy of Amitiza in men was not much higher that the efficacy of simple sugar pill). That is why, Amitiza is recommended only for women, and not for men or children.

What is Amitiza and how does it actually work? Amitiza is a medication, produced by Sucampo Pharmaceuticals. Its main ingredient is lubiprostone. The main action of the medication is increasing the secretion of fluid in the intestines, as well as provoking bowel movements, which result in elimination of constipation.

What is the dose of Amitiza for IBS-C and how to take Amitiza? In order to relieve IBS with constipation, the 8 microgram pill of Amitiza should be taken twice a day. It is better to take this medicine with food and water.

What could be the adverse reactions of Amitiza? Well, as with any other medication, Amitiza can cause some side effects – some of them are pretty mild, like nausea and diarrhoea, and some (urinary tract infections, fainting, difficulty breathing) may really raise serious concerns. So, the consultation with a doctor as for the possibility and expediency of Amitiza therapy is highly recommended. Finally, it is all about evaluating benefits and risks of a particular medication use in every particular case.

What do people, who have already tried Amitiza, say about it? The feedbacks from those, who have already taken Amitiza to treat their irritable bowel varies from negative statements, like “Awful” and “I have never felt so ill in my life as when I took Amitiza” to very positive and really motivational ones, such as “I have been using Amitiza for seven days for IBS-C and it is a miracle.” In most cases, side effects are what worry people the most. However, the same refers to any other medicine on Earth.

Anyway, Amitiza is the first and the only medication, officially approved as a remedy against irritable bowel syndrome. So, if you are a woman of 18 years and above, suffering from IBS-C type, why not to consult a doctor about Amitiza?

Boo
Should I take amitiza next day, after I've had an experience that day with slight IBS?

Can you explain the difference in Amitiza & the over-the-counter Miralax? I thought Miralax was suppose to increase fluids to the intestine too. If so, what are the benefits of using Amitiza as compared to Miralax -- this is very expensive & I do not want to be paying this high price if I can use the OTC & get the same results. Thank you.
