Clobex lotion is easy and convenient to apply, it is quickly absorbed into the skin, and it works really effectively to lessen the symptoms of moderate to severe cases of the above mentioned conditions. Used twice daily, as it is recommended, it provides stable relief of itching, redness, inflammation, swelling and irritation of the affected skin.
In several clinical studies, which compared different features of Clobex lotion and Clobetasol cream, lotion showed better results than cream.
Clobetasol propionate – the active ingredient of Clobex – is a super-potent corticosteroid, which interferes with the processes of inflammation development in the body. However, the exact mechanism of this chemical action remains unexplained.
Taking into account that steroid medications are never indicated for the long-term use, Clobex should also be applied onto the skin not longer than for 2 weeks. If a patient uses it longer without the doctor’s recommendations, serious adverse reactions are possible to take place.
Among the most common side effects of Clobex, which are experienced by many patients, are dry cracked skin, its discoloration or burning, tingling, and itching sensations. In case of corticosteroid extended use or overdose the suppression of hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis may occur, which in the majority of patients can be successfully treated, except for a rare minority for whom the consequences become irreversible.
In order to avoid these undesirable effects of the medication, one should use Clobex according to the doctor’s recommendations. Usually less than one teaspoonful of lotion is applied onto the affected area and rubbed gently until the substance disappears. The drug of such high potency is not indicated for use on the face, neck, groin or armpits. Neither should it be applied onto the lips or near the eyes. It is advised to wash hands thoroughly after using Clobex.
If the symptoms of the disorder are not relieved as supposed, a doctor may recommend dose adjustment or another treatment plan.
Since clobetasol may harm liver functioning, patients with liver problems may be contraindicated for the use of this medicine. Pregnant women are under the risk of harming the normal development of the baby, thus they are recommended to undergo the treatment with Clobex only if the benefits clearly overweigh potential risks. Children 12 years and older were included into the studies to evaluate the possibility of treatment with Clobex, the drug showed high potency of suppressing HPA axis and was thus not approved for use in such population.
Although Clobex has good anti-inflammatory, antipruritic, and vasoconstrictive properties, it is a strong medication, capable of causing serious side effects and leading to addiction, thus it should always be used with caution and according to doctor’s recommendations.
