Talking about people and illnesses, it is reasonable to divide patients into two categories, according to the attitude to their diseases. Those, belonging to the first category, talk about the pitiable state of their health everywhere rather looking for sympathy than really suffering from a disease. Patients of the second category avoid even mentioning about their disorders, trying to forget about those torturers at least for some time, or being ashamed of their conditions.
That is also true that concentrating attention on diseases will not help curing them. However, in some cases it is beneficial for a patient to study his or her disorder for a while to define what can aggravate or lessen the symptoms.
People, suffering from psoriasis, usually avoid talking about their problems; still, they should also be aware of the possible triggers of the disease. Although everyone can notice a unique thing, which worsens only his/her state, there are some triggers of psoriasis, common for many people.
Infections. It is proved that streptococcal infection may be the cause of guttate psoriasis in people genetically predisposed to this disease. Inverse psoriasis may be aggravated by thrush infection (Candida albicans viruses). HIV, staphylococcus, and such illnesses as cold, tonsillitis, chicken pox are often the triggers of the first outbreak of psoriasis. Drugs. It is not rare that some medicines cause or worsen psoriasis in many people. To such drugs belong beta-blockers, systemic cortisones, lithium, anti-malarial drugs, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).
Skin injury. Koebner phenomenon this is the name for the aggravated symptoms or the flare-up of psoriasis in those, who suffer from this skin condition. The signs usually become visible in 10-14 days after the skin is injured (cut, scratched, rubbed, or sunburned).
Hormonal changes. The relation between hormonal levels and psoriasis is not properly studied yet. Scientific researches show that periods, pregnancy, and delivery may be beneficial for some women with this skin condition and harmful for others. The same situation is with the puberty period some young people experience worsening, while others notice the improvement of the disease. Further studies are needed to explain this phenomenon.
Stress. Being a quite understandable result of psoriasis (people often suffer psychologically from this condition), stress, at the same time, usually aggravates its symptoms increasing itching and redness. The way out here is to consult a doctor about the possible methods of stress management. Remember that alcohol abuse and other harmful habits, as well as unproved healing methods, never lead to rescue from evil.
Weather. Sun exposure is said to be beneficial for many people with psoriasis, but not for all. At the same time, dry climate and low humidity usually worsen the condition. In this case, moisturizing skin areas with psoriasis can help a lot.
Smoking and alcohol. The results of many scientific trials show that tobacco smoking causes flare ups of pustular and plaque psoriasis in some people, as well as affects the severity of the condition. To be on the safe side, it is better to avoid smoking; this will also help improve the overall health no need to say how harmful this bad habit for different parts and systems of the body is.
Alcohol may seem a good way out of stress caused by psoriasis. Patients should, at the same time, be aware of the fact that drinking itself often becomes a trigger of the disease symptoms.
Sweating. This last trigger works most often in obese and overweight people, who sweat more than others and have more folds on their skin. The presence of these two factors may result in the development or worsening of the inverse psoriasis.
To make a conclusion, it is worthy to say that all the triggers described above are more likely to target predisposed to psoriasis persons; however, we never know the destinys intentions. As the result, anyone can find himself at the wrong place and time and become a victim of psoriasis due to one of these triggers.
