Treating Depression with Cymbalta
Once a famous American psychologist Rollo May said: “Depression is the inability to construct a future”. Multiply this inability by a bunch of depression symptoms, such as irritation, feeling helpless and hopeless, loss of interest, energy decrease, sleep problems, appetite and weight changes, and, finally, disorders of sexual performance, any of which can sometimes practically ruin the comfort of one’s present living – and it becomes quite clear why so many doctors, scientists and psychologists work hard for years in order to develop and introduce new and new strategies, approaches and medications to treat depression.

Depression therapy has moved into the higher level of its development with the invention of selective-serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) in the late 1980th. However, the new millennium brought people even more sophisticated medications to treat depression. In year 2004 the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Cymbalta – a new medication, developed by the Lilly, a pharmaceutical company already known on the market for the development and marketing of Cialis, a real blockbuster drug for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.

Cymbalta, or duloxetine hydrochloride by generic name, belongs to a class of antidepressants, known as SSNRIs (selective serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors). One of the most curious issues about Cymbalta (as well as many other modern drugs) is that our scientists are good enough at discovering new chemicals with the necessary healing properties, but they often fail at understanding how exactly those substances work. The same with Cymbalta – even the official web site of the medication offers its visitors to learn not how Cymbalta works, but “…how it is believed to work”.

Anyway, even without clearly explained mode of action, Cymbalta can work effectively and safely in treating patients with major depressive disorder, as well as a couple of other health problems, including anxiety, diabetic nerve pain and fibromyalgia. Plus – Cymbalta’s mode of action is not a kind of absolutely unknown issue: scientists do have a theory of how it works. They say that the active ingredient of Cymbalta can fix the misbalances in the amounts of two natural chemicals – serotonin and norepinephrine, which take active part in the many processes in human brains, including regulation of our mood and feelings. So, when those two hormones began to play tricks with our brains – it results in depression symptoms; and one of the methods to pacify them is, definitely, Cymbalta.

So, if one suffers from depression and he would like to try Cymbalta and check its effectiveness and glorified safety – what does he need to do?

First of all, remember that Cymbalta is available only by prescription in the USA. Thus, the first step towards treating depression with Cymbalta should be a visit to a doctor, who can decide whether Cymbalta is an appropriate choice for every particular patient, and issue a prescription. Along with the prescription doctor will also give a patient detailed recommendations on how to use Cymbalta. Please, do not try to increase effectiveness of the medication by increasing the prescribed strength or frequency of use – remember that Cymbalta works in the human brain, which usually does not forgive playing tricks with it.

Usually Cymbalta is prescribed at 20mg or 30 mg doses twice daily (or two pills at a time once daily) for acute treatment of depressive symptoms, and at 60 mg daily dose for the maintenance treatment. The pills can be taken without the regard to meals, but it is important to swallow the tablet whole without chewing, crushing or opening the capsule of the medication.

Finally, it is interesting to find out what happens after one starts taking Cymbalta? Well, the situation here may develop in several directions – someone starts feeling relief of depression in about a week after the beginning of treatment, and that is, definitely, good; others do not feel relief so quickly, but this is still not bad, because it usually takes one to six weeks for Cymbalta to start working and present the first visible changes in one’s condition; and, finally, some patients on Cymbalta may sometimes feel dry mouth, sleepiness, constipation, decreased appetite and increased sweating – this should be treated as side effects of the medication and any of such symptoms, if they cause inconveniences, should be discussed with a doctor.

So, this is what Cymbalta is and how one can use it in order to treat the symptoms of major depressive disorder. If depression is what spoils your life today – why don’t you speak with a doctor about this modern medication, which has already helped many people and may help you to construct your future without depression?
