Humira in Treating Crohn’s Disease
Persistent diarrhea, abdominal pain and cramps, fever, fatigue, rectal bleeding and loss of appetite – these are the symptoms of Crohn’s disease, a common subtype of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Definitely, such bothersome, painful and embarrassing symptoms can significantly spoil the life of a human. Moreover, taking into account that Crohn’s disease often strikes people at age 15 – 35, it becomes clear that the health problem, named Crohn’s disease, requires a quick and effective response.

A range of solutions for the above mentioned health disorder has been developed by pharmaceutics recently, and Humira is, perhaps, one of the most powerful weapons against Crohn’s disease.

Though scientists have not yet understood why Crohn’s disease appears in people, they have clearly identified that all those, who suffer from the disorder, have the increased level of a substance, called tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-a), which is responsible for the development of inflammation.

Humira is a medication that was designed to block TNF in people, and thus prevent the development of inflammatory processes in human digestive tract. Once the excess of tumor necrosis factor is blocked, the inflammation decreases, and so do the symptoms of Crohn’s disease. Besides, Humira can keep the disorder in its remission phase, which means that the symptoms-free period is significantly increased with the help of Humira.

What is important and interesting to know is that Humira is significantly different from other medications. Humira belongs to a modern advanced group of medicines, called biologics. It means that the medicine is made not from different chemical substances, but from living organisms and the substances, which are present in them, such as proteins, antibodies and genes.

Humira or adalimumab by generic name was constructed from a fully human monoclonal antibody (the name “Humira” means “Human Monoclonal Antibody in Rheumatoid Arthritis”). Since it is a biological substance, it can not be produced in the form of common pills for oral administration, because biological compound will be destroyed by human digestive system.

That is why Humira is administered by injection under the skin of thighs or abdomen with the special Humira pen, which is designed so that a patient could make injection by himself at the comfort of his home. However, it should be remembered that before using Humira by himself for the first time, one should receive a detailed description of how to use this medication properly from his doctor, nurse or other healthcare provider (the instructions are also available at the official Humira web site).

Humira is prescribed for the treatment of moderate to severe Crohn’s disease or in those cases, when patients does not respond well to another effective treatment option, called Remicade (Infliximab), another TNFa blocker, which, unlike Humira, is administered only through a needle into a patient’s vein.

To date, Humira is approved in more than 75 countries as the treatment of Crohn’s disease, and some other health disorders, whether inflammation plays a key role, for example, arthritis, psoriasis and spondylitis.

So, if you personally or someone close to you, suffer from moderate to severe symptoms of Crohn’s disease, it can be an idea to talk to a healthcare provider about Humira. Though it is important to underline once more that Humira is a modern mighty and sophisticated weapon against the disorder, it could be a kind of a “magic bullet” against Crohn’s disease, but keep in mind that since it is a biological “bullet”, it should be used with a special care, accuracy and attention to details.
