The desire to be healthy is so natural and very strong in every person, even if he or she does not realize it. We all do our best to keep diseases at a distance. Similarly, people, who suffer from disorders which can only be controlled, not cured, take infinite pains to avoid new outbreaks of their conditions.
Hives belong to the cohort of health disorders, recurrences of which can be quite frequent in some people. No wonder, they seek for effective ways of suppressing the symptoms and preventing outbreaks of the illness, since this disorder not less than other health problems may seriously affect the state of a sufferer (physical, as well as psychological), disrupt the normal life rhythm, and make a person unable or unwilling to fulfill usual everyday activities.
How to Prevent Hives Outbreaks?
In fact, looking through extensive medicinal literature or surfing the net in search of effective measures and reliable methods of preventing new outbreaks of hives, one, unfortunately, is not likely to find a lot of the options.
Hives in many cases is caused by allergic reaction of the body to some substances, things, or surrounding conditions. Therefore, the most common advice is to avoid the triggers of the disease. Here may belong:
- dust mites;
- pollen;
- insect bites;
- foods and their preservatives;
- chemicals in detergents and cleaners;
- dyes in clothes;
- cosmetics;
- heat, cold, or wind;
- physical pressure to the skin;
- sweating, exercising, physical or emotional strain;
- infections;
- medications;
- liquids (water), etc.
It may be quite challenging to define the trigger of hives; keeping a diary may help a lot for the sufferers to get to know all the things or situations, which can provoke disease recurrences.
Some people, however, suffer from hives, the cause of which is impossible to define. These patients are recommended to use medications, which are available in a large number nowadays, to control the outbreaks of the disorder. The most common drugs used are over-the-counter antihistamines.
Who is at Risk of Developing Hives?
Some persons may be at greater risk than others of suffering from certain health disorders; although it is not necessary that they unambiguously develop a disease.
As regards hives, it may often strike people prone to allergies in general and persons genetically predisposed particularly to hives. Scientists explain that genetic predisposition plays an important role in a number of hives cases, and it is sometimes considered to be the actual reason for the development of the disease.
In addition, such groups of people are said to experience hives recurrences more often than others:
- those who have already suffered from hives;
- sufferers of such disorders as lupus, lymphoma, or thyroid disease, which are associated with hives;
- patients with a family history of hives.
Finally, new hives outbreaks may occur in persons who are exposed to and cannot avoid exposure to the known triggers of the disease. In such cases it is advised to do all one can (no matter how hard it may be) to limit or avoid contact with the things and substances, which provoke hives. It is better to restrict oneself from something than to eliminate the consequences, isn’t it?
