Back Pain: Not So Funny As It Seems

Children enjoy watching old people when they bend over and all of a sudden feel sharp pain in the back and cannot move any more. Little wags find it very funny, nevertheless they do not know it is not that cool to experience back pain. Perhaps, with the lapse of time they will understand it. The chances are very high, because 90% of all humans face the problem of back pain at some point of their life, not necessarily in the old age.

In most cases people experience acute pain, which fades away in 4-6 weeks. It can be caused by overuse, strain or injury to the muscles, ligaments, bony elements or neurological structures that support spine. Recurrences of acute pain are common, but they can be overwhelmed with the help of home treatment.

On the other hand, one person in 100 has real big problems, when back pain becomes chronic, lasting more than 3 months. It must be thoroughly examined and medically treated. Usually chronic back pain is a result of long-term developmental disorders (as abnormalities in the formation and growth of the skeleton) or the appearance of tumors and cancers of the spine and spinal cord (though they are rare).

Inflammatory and infectious disorders can also be the sources of back pain. They are difficult to diagnose and can have serious consequences if not treated.

The most vulnerable part is a lower back, because it always supports the most of the body weight. That is why it is likely to ache, even if the actual reason is in the upper back, a hernia in the groin, or a problem in the testicles or ovaries. Therefore, a patient may feel only the echo of a real disease.

Back pain manifests itself in many ways: stiffness, numbness, tingling, burning, dull and sharp aching, weakness in legs and even fever. All these symptoms are valid reasons to see a doctor as soon as possible.

Since back pain is often a result of our exhausting lifestyle (too little rest, much strain to the organism, bad posture, fast and unhealthy food, lack of exercising), we can become the masters of the situation and try to preserve our health. The tips are easy – we must only have will to follow them: alternate work and rest, exercise (stretching, swimming are very good for lower back), improve your posture, try to maintain your ideal weight, keep to a healthy and nutritious diet, give up smoking, wear low-heeled shoes, avoid lifting too heavy objects, do not abuse walking or standing.

We often claim the environment and the tempo of modern life to be the reasons for our health disorders. In many situations, though, we are to blame. We are lazy and reluctant to do simple things, which can preserve our health. Try to break this vicious circle. It is hard, but it’s worth trying.
