Acular Against Eye Allergy
Pain, swelling, redness, and inflammation are exactly the cases where nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are among the first-line options. Mentioned symptoms are effectively reduced with these medications due to their influence on prostaglandins – powerful inflammation and pain mediators. NSAIDs work to inhibit the enzymes, which are necessary for prostaglandins production.

While systemic NSAIDs are popular and familiar practically to everyone, topical drugs of this class are known by fewer people. Still, these medications showed their high efficacy when used topically and are now more frequently prescribed to improve different conditions.

Seasonal eye allergies are among the disorders, the symptoms of which may be treated with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory ophthalmic drops like Acular. The effect of this drug on prostaglandins results in the lessening of eye redness and itching.

Investigations and numerous clinical studies showed that prostaglandins, released during the seasonal conjunctivitis along with allergic response mediators, had a direct influence on the occurrence of such ophthalmic symptoms as vasodilation, increased intraocular pressure and vascular permeability, raised white blood cells count (leukocytosis), etc.

Consequently, suppressing the production of prostaglandins – the ability Acular possesses – fights eye allergy signs and symptoms.

Acular main active ingredient is ketorolac tromethamine, which is a non-selective COX (cyclooxygenase) enzyme inhibitor. It has analgesic (pain-killing), anti-inflammatory, and anti-pyretic activity (fever-reducing) activities. If used for a limited period of time (as it is usually prescribed by the doctors) it has only mild side effects (temporary burning or stinging in the eyes).

In order to reduce the occurrence of these adverse reactions, the 0.4% solution along with 0.5% preparation is available in the pharmacies. However, other side effects have been reported in the clinical studies results. Among them were allergic reactions, ocular irritation, headache, eye dryness, blurry vision, iritis and keratitis.

The benefit of Acular is that it does not cause pupil constriction during the therapy and does not increase intraocular pressure. It can safely be used in elderly patients without the risk of severe side effects. However, pregnant and breastfeeding women are advised to use Acular only if the anticipated results overweigh the potential risks.

People, allergic to any NSAID or any ingredient of Acular, should not use this medication. Patients, suffering from any serious heath disorders (as kidney or liver conditions) should inform a doctor about the state of their health prior to using this drug. It is also worthy to underline that wearing contact lenses is not advised during the therapy.

The relief of eye allergy symptoms is guaranteed if one uses 1 drop of Acular 4 times a day. Moreover, these drops can also be used to bring relief after cataract surgery.

Although no food and drug interactions of Acular have been discovered by this time, a patient should always inform a doctor about any medicines or food supplements he/she is taking. Similarly, no overdose reports are known.

Acular is intended for the short-term use only; however, it significantly improves allergic conjunctivitis symptoms, allowing a patient to view the outward things in their true colour.
