Pulling a trigger of a gun poses a mortal danger to a human being’s life. He who suffers from any health condition knows perfectly that illnesses also have their own triggers, “pulling” which in the majority of cases results in the new outbreak of the disease.
Rosacea belongs to those treatable but not curable conditions, which can be controlled and suppressed with the help of two methods applied simultaneously: using medications (to lessen the symptoms) and avoiding triggers (to prolong the remissions).
The latter include a great number of factors; therefore, it would be reasonable to discuss this topic in details and describe the most common triggers provoking rosacea flare-ups. However, one should remember that the things, conditions, and substances, which cause the aggravation of the disease symptoms, are different for every patient; consequently, identifying those triggers is an individual process.
Making reference to the patients’ histories and scientific research, such factors were identified as the possible rosacea triggers:
1) physical activity – exercising, “lift and load” jobs, even making love can induce the flare-up of rosacea in some patients;
2) emotions – stress, anxiety, fear, embarrassment, or any other positive or negative emotion provoke facial flushing and blushing resulting in the new outbreak of the disease;
3) heat and warmth – here belong hot and warm environments indoors and outside, including sun exposure, saunas and baths, warm rooms, as well as lying on the pillow or beside a beloved one;
4) weather – strong winds, humidity and cold weather, as well as heat, may also trigger an outbreak of rosacea;
5) foods – practically any kind of food, depending on the individual, can be called rosacea trigger; the most common foods are: liver, cheese, yogurt, tomatoes, spinach, citrus fruits, raisins, eggplant, avocados, chocolate, vanilla, thermally hot and spicy foods, etc.;
6) beverages – alcohol (especially red wine, vodka, gin, bourbon) and hot drinks (tea, coffee, hot chocolate);
7) certain health disorders – menopause, chronic cough, caffeine withdrawal syndrome and some other diseases may play a role in the appearance of rosacea symptoms;
8) medications – the most harmful in this aspect drugs are vasolidators and topical steroids;
9) cosmetic products – hair sprays, creams, lotions, especially those containing alcohol may also be a great danger for rosacea patients.
In fact, any thing surrounding a person with rosacea may be evaluated as a possible disease trigger. In order to define what exactly causes new outbreaks, it is highly advisable to keep a diary of activities and events and rosacea flare-ups.
The worst thing about it all is that some triggers cannot possibly be avoided: for example, some patients say that even such activity as playing with a child ends up with flushing and blushing. No doubt, there is nothing worse for a caring parent than having no possibility to feel the real joy of raising a child. Consequently, for some patients there is the only one option left besides medications – ignoring rosacea outbreaks. Confirm yourself that symptoms can be suppressed with drugs; what really matters is living life the way you want.
